AI to Become Mandatory Diagnostic Tool for Russian Doctors

Artificial intelligence is proving more accurate than human specialists at analyzing medical images—and will soon be integrated into daily healthcare workflows.

Russia is taking a major step toward AI-powered healthcare, with plans to make artificial intelligence a mandatory assistant for physicians diagnosing diseases.

According to Yevgeny Kuznetsov, CEO of the Digital Evolution Ventures foundation, AI systems outperform the average human specialist in analyzing medical images. For example, when interpreting CT scans of the lungs and mammograms, AI shows a 5–10% higher sensitivity rate than traditional methods.

Moscow has already made significant progress in integrating AI into its healthcare system, positioning Russia among global leaders in the field. Starting next year, China plans to require doctors to use 'second opinion' algorithms. Similar measures may be adopted in Europe and the U.S. by 2028.

Kuznetsov recommends that Russian universities introduce training modules focused on working with AI to better prepare future doctors for digital diagnostics.

Despite the rise of automation, final diagnostic responsibility will still rest with licensed medical professionals.
