Ancient Novgorod Church to Receive Digital Twin

Archaeological excavations have resumed at the 12th-century church on the Borisoglebsky excavation site in Veliky Novgorod. Researchers will continue studying the structure and create a digital 3D model of the monument.

The work is being carried out by specialists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University, with support from the Novgorod Museum-Reserve. The research is part of a three-year project funded by the Russian Science Foundation.

Over the next six weeks, researchers will study the church's foundations, construction materials and archaeological context. The data will form the basis of a high-precision 3D reconstruction, making it possible to preserve the excavation results in digital form and continue studying them after the fieldwork is completed.

"In essence, the 3D model becomes a digital framework around which a unified information environment is created for the preservation and study of cultural heritage sites. This approach makes it possible to manage historically significant monuments effectively and ensure their preservation for future generations," said Andrei Shakhramanyan, chief executive of SODIS Lab.
