Rosenergoatom Receives Licenses for Kola Nuclear Power Plant 2
Rosenergoatom has received construction licenses from Russia's nuclear regulator, Rostechnadzor, for the first two reactor units of Kola Nuclear Power Plant 2 in the Murmansk Region. The facility will become Russia's first nuclear power plant equipped with VVER-600 medium-capacity reactors.
Construction of Units 1 and 2 is scheduled to take place between 2027 and 2037. Each reactor will have a capacity of 600 MW, and its main equipment is designed for an operating lifetime of 80 years. Two additional VVER-600 units are planned for the site at a later stage. The four reactors are scheduled to enter service in 2035, 2037, 2042, and 2043. The plant will be built on the shore of Lake Imandra near Kunchast Bay, where geological, topographical, and seismic conditions have been deemed optimal for construction.
The project is being implemented under Russia's national power sector development plan through 2042, approved by the Russian government.
According to Masloboev, analysis of the region's energy challenges points to strong prospects for further nuclear power development, including its use for district heating.
