Arctic Expedition to Test Stratospheric Platform for Ice Monitoring Without Satellites
MAU is preparing to test a recoverable stratospheric platform for Arctic research during the Icebreaker of Knowledge expedition to the North Pole.

The fixed-wing platform, which has a wingspan of 3 meters, is attached to a stratospheric balloon. After ascending to an altitude of more than 20 kilometers, it separates from the balloon, flies autonomously, and returns to a designated landing point. The balloon is designed for single use, but it is made from biodegradable materials to minimize its environmental impact on the Arctic.
Researchers have already completed trial flights at a test site in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan. Meanwhile, the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy (50 Years of Victory) is preparing to depart from Murmansk to transport expedition participants to the North Pole.
Scientists expect to collect meteorological data and information on Arctic ice conditions while also testing new approaches to maintaining communications in the Arctic.
