MAI Develops Fixed-Wing Delivery Drone With Vertical Takeoff Capability
The first drones could begin making commercial deliveries as early as next year.

Researchers at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) are developing a fixed-wing drone for short-range parcel delivery. In addition to its airplane-style configuration, the aircraft will support vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL).
According to the researchers, a fixed-wing design offers several advantages over multirotor drones. Because the aircraft can remain aloft by gliding rather than relying entirely on powered lift, it consumes significantly less energy during flight.
The project envisions drones capable of carrying payloads of up to 15 kilograms over distances of 10 to 15 kilometers. The developers say the aircraft could help companies address shortages of delivery personnel.
