Rosseti Tests New Technology to Increase Transmission Line Capacity

Rosseti has begun testing a new technology that could eventually help increase the capacity of transmission lines. The tests are being conducted at one of the company’s training sites.
The technology automatically calculates the maximum allowable current load. The system takes into account current weather conditions as well as the temperature of the conductor.
The experimental setup fully replicates the operation of a transmission line under real-world conditions. It includes a frequency converter and load transformer that regulate the current in the conductor from 50 to 3,000 A, as well as an automated station that collects data on weather conditions and other parameters. Remote diagnostic modules installed on the conductors record a range of system operating parameters. The maximum current load is then determined based on the full set of data.
The possibility of scaling up the technology will be considered after the tests.
