Researchers at Sechenov University have created a prototype VR training tool designed to develop cognitive skills in children with autism spectrum disorders. The device focuses on improving important cognitive functions such as memory and attention. That sets it apart from most existing alternatives, which train only basic social skills.

“Our technology is based on clinical studies and meta-analyses showing that VR technologies can be effective for cognitive training in people with autism spectrum disorders,” said project author Malika Rakhimova, a graduate of Sechenov University’s Digital Department.

To use the training tool, a child puts on a VR headset and enters an interactive environment with a range of tasks. These can include sorting fruits and vegetables into baskets, remembering sequences of objects that appear on screen, or finding objects by color. Developers say this game-based format helps children develop attention, memory and cognitive flexibility without stress.
