West-Engineering Supplies Equipment for Turkey’s Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant
Russian company West-Engineering has shipped a batch of 30 relay protection and automation cabinets for Unit 2 of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Türkiye.

The equipment is designed to protect, monitor and control the plant’s electrical systems. In all, the Russian company delivered seven types of cabinets to Türkiye, each serving different functions within the unit’s electrical systems.
For example, the analog and discrete data acquisition cabinet collects data from sensors and sends it to the control system, while the protection equipment cabinet monitors electrical circuit parameters and disconnects equipment under fault conditions. Other devices monitor voltage and power at the plant’s main electrical nodes, synchronize the generator with the power grid using the required parameters, execute commands to open and close the main circuit breaker, record operating events and parameters for subsequent analysis, and supply power to control and protection systems.
Each relay protection cabinet performs a specific function within the unit’s overall power supply system. Together, they form an integrated system that reliably protects equipment against short circuits and overloads.

Safety Requirements
Nuclear power plant equipment is engineered with greater safety margins. Relay protection cabinets must operate reliably under all conditions, including earthquakes and other abnormal events. The safety of both the power unit and plant personnel depends on their reliable operation. The supplied cabinets meet Safety Class 3 requirements, while the QA3 quality category requires multistage quality control throughout production.
Quality control begins with the selection of materials and components. Engineers inspect electronic components, wiring, connectors and enclosures before monitoring the assembly and installation of components inside the cabinets. During testing, the equipment is checked against all specified performance requirements. Only after successfully passing every inspection and test are the cabinets shipped to the customer.

Integration Into a Unified System
Relay protection cabinets become more effective when integrated into a unified system. West-Engineering has developed its own electrical equipment monitoring and control system. The relay protection cabinets connect to the system and transmit data to the control center.
The unified platform coordinates all connected devices. Operators can see the status of the plant’s electrical equipment on their screens in real time because the system centrally collects and processes information from hundreds of sensors and devices. The system also performs equipment diagnostics. Its algorithms analyze operating parameters and warn operators of potential problems before they occur, allowing maintenance teams to schedule repairs in advance and replace components before they fail.

Contract Covers All Four Units
The shipment is part of a major contract to equip all four units of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. West-Engineering previously shipped a similar set of 30 relay protection and automation cabinets for Unit 1. The nuclear power plant itself is being built in Türkiye’s Mersin province on the Mediterranean coast. It is the country’s first nuclear power project. The plant will comprise four units equipped with Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors, with a total installed capacity of 4,800 MW.
The contract calls for West-Engineering to help equip all four units, supplying not only relay protection cabinets but other electrical equipment as well. In February 2026, the company shipped titanium-alloy instrumentation stands for Unit 1. In July 2026, it ramped up production of fire protection monitoring and control systems for the plant.
