Russia Develops Digital Model for Autonomous Mining Operations

The system from NUST MISIS can analyze production and identify areas for fully automated work, paving the way for next-generation smart mines.

Scientists at the National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS) have created a logical digital model of a mining enterprise capable of independently analyzing operations and pinpointing processes that could be automated. The breakthrough marks a major step toward building autonomous mines and open pits—not only in Russia, but globally.

Mining has long been one of the most difficult industries to automate due to its constantly changing environmental and geological conditions. Unlike factory assembly lines, mining operations depend on complex natural variables and shifting technological factors. The new system addresses this challenge by representing the entire enterprise as an integrated digital ecosystem.

The technology is based on ontological modeling, which structures all components of the enterprise—and the relationships between them—into a hierarchical knowledge base. Rather than storing fragmented data, the model creates a coherent logical system interpretable by both human specialists and artificial intelligence.

A Step Toward Smart, Self-Managing Production

“Our model is the foundation for future autonomous systems, where software agents can interact, analyze information, and automatically adjust technological processes,” said Sergey Deryabin, senior lecturer at the Department of Automated Control Systems at NUST MISIS. “This is a key stage on the path toward fully ‘smart’ production.”

The system’s versatility means it can be applied across industries where full human control is difficult or unsafe. It is expected to become the basis for digital twins and AI-driven management platforms, enabling more efficient production while removing personnel from hazardous environments.

The research findings have already been published in the Journal of Mining Institute, signaling international recognition for a development that could redefine how heavy industry operates—through intelligent, autonomous, and safer mining systems.
