Russian Scientists Find Way to Stabilize Stand-Alone Power Systems in Seconds
The systems are used in remote communities and at industrial facilities.

Scientists at Tomsk Polytechnic University, working with colleagues in China, have developed a model of a stand-alone power system that uses renewable energy sources. The system incorporates specialized hydrogen energy storage units that act as grid stabilizers during emergencies or sudden frequency fluctuations. It can restore normal operating conditions in less than one second.
Stand-alone power systems are widely used in remote communities and at industrial facilities. They rely on solar panels and wind turbines. A weak point of such systems is periodic fluctuations in frequency and voltage that can occur when the load increases sharply or one of the power sources is disconnected.
The new system monitors not only frequency deviations but also how quickly the frequency is changing. If the frequency begins to rise or fall rapidly, the inverter immediately generates a control signal to regulate the system. The researchers plan to improve the technology by adding adaptive control capabilities.
