New Simulator Developed for Crew of Nuclear Icebreaker Rossiya

Specialists at OKBM Afrikantov have developed an onboard simulator for operational personnel of the lead nuclear icebreaker Rossiya under Project 10510.

The new hardware and software system will allow future crew members to train in operating the world’s most powerful RITM-400 reactor units long before the vessel enters service.

From Simulation to Operational Control

The simulator is based on a complex software model that reproduces, in real time, the physical processes occurring within the reactor plant. This enables full simulation of both standard operating conditions and a wide range of off-normal scenarios. Operators receive the same information as they would at a real control panel. As a result, they make decisions in conditions that closely match real-world operations.

This approach is particularly important for next-generation icebreakers. Rossiya is set to become the most powerful vessel of its kind, with two RITM-400 reactor units delivering 315 MW of thermal output each, exceeding all existing marine reactor systems. Managing such a power system requires not only deep expertise but also responses refined to the level of automatic reaction under any deviation from normal conditions.

High Safety Standards

The simulator’s primary function goes beyond initial training. It is designed to maintain the highest level of operational readiness among personnel. This is especially critical for operations along the Northern Sea Route, where errors can have severe consequences. Project 10510 icebreakers are intended for year-round navigation in ice up to three meters thick, under polar night conditions and extreme temperatures. In such environments, both human and machine reliability must be uncompromising.

The simulator has already been tested at OKBM Afrikantov’s site in Nizhny Novgorod. In the near term, at least 200 specialists – future crew members of Rossiya and reserve personnel for other nuclear icebreakers – will undergo training on the system. The program will be delivered in multiple stages, from studying individual systems to full-scale exercises involving the entire power plant under various operating modes.

A Digital Twin for Nuclear Power Systems

The development of the onboard simulator builds on OKBM Afrikantov’s long-standing expertise in high-performance computing and mathematical modeling. The company, part of Rosatom’s Mechanical Engineering Division, previously developed digital twins for RITM-200 reactor units used on Project 22220 icebreakers. The new simulator represents an evolution of these solutions, adapted to the more powerful and complex RITM-400 systems.

Similar systems are already in use at the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant for training in radiation safety operations, and at Sevastopol State University, where a VVER-1000 simulator has been introduced for students.

The Arctic as a Strategic Challenge

Construction of the nuclear icebreaker Rossiya is underway in the Russian Far East at the Zvezda shipbuilding complex. Once commissioned, it will become a key element of the Northern Sea Route infrastructure, enabling escort of large-tonnage vessels in the eastern Arctic sector. This aligns directly with national strategic objectives for Arctic development and the expansion of transport corridors.

The performance of personnel directly affects not only the safety of the vessel but also the resilience of the entire logistics chain linking Europe and Asia via the Northern Sea Route. Technological leadership in the Arctic depends on highly skilled professionals whose capabilities are reinforced by advanced training systems.

Such operations demonstrate that modern Arctic shipping is a synthesis of human expertise and advanced technology. We are proud that our solutions enable the shift of high-risk maneuver training from real ice into a safe virtual environment. Such solutions reduce the risk of damage to costly equipment and improve the predictability of even the most complex operations, which ultimately strengthens the reliability of Northern Sea Route logistics
