Russian scientists have created a platform called Tsifrovoy kovcheg (Digital Ark) that uses artificial intelligence to analyze icons and help reconstruct missing elements of the images.

A Neural Network as Icon Painter

The platform was developed by specialists at RTU MIREA. The system uses artificial intelligence technologies to analyze images of icons and can recognize details of composition, narrative scenes and the saints depicted in them.

The algorithms can identify missing elements and reconstruct them while following the traditional canons of icon painting. To train the neural network, researchers compiled a database of roughly 6,000 works. Developers plan to expand the dataset to improve the system’s accuracy.

Before the platform is deployed, specialists will conduct additional testing of the algorithms and evaluate their performance on different samples of icons.

A Tool for Restorers

“There are icons whose fragments are difficult to restore, and artificial intelligence can help with that. AI can also be used for restoring paintings and books,” said Ekaterina Altabaeva, chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture.

At the same time, the senator stressed the importance of involving professional restorers.

“But it is absolutely clear that this process cannot take place without the involvement of experienced restorers who have spent years in the profession, received professional training and possess the necessary skills,” she added.

Technology Protecting Cultural Heritage

The Federation Council is also discussing measures to support projects aimed at restoring cultural heritage sites. Among the proposals under consideration is expanding preferential lending programs for investors involved in restoring historic buildings.

Federation Council chair Valentina Matviyenko previously said that preserving historical, cultural and architectural monuments requires coordinated efforts by the state and private investors.
