AI Helps Volunteers Fight Coastal Trash in Primorye

A new phase of the Chisty bereg (Clean Coast) project, run by the Nature Defenders Foundation to monitor and clear marine debris from coastlines, is focused on automating surveillance of hard-to-reach areas using satellite data, aircraft and machine-learning algorithms, according to the press service of the Land of the Leopard protected areas administration.

The press service also said volunteers cleared trash from a 100-meter stretch of a bay with difficult terrain. Data collected during the cleanup will be used to further train the neural network, allowing it to estimate the volume and weight of trash from images faster and more accurately.
