Smart Scales With Neural Networks Debut in Russian Grocery Stores

Retail chain Yarche is deploying AI-powered scales that recognize products in seconds, speeding up checkout and reducing cashier errors.

The Yarche grocery chain has introduced intelligent scales that can automatically recognize items in one to two seconds with over 90 percent accuracy.

Here’s how it works: cameras above the scales capture the product on the platform. The image is then processed by a neural network that analyzes shape, color, and other parameters. The system is linked to the store’s inventory data, matching the weighed item with current stock and offering the cashier only available options. The AI performs reliably even when products are wrapped in clear packaging or appear at unusual angles.

The project was built from scratch by IT company MAG Development specifically for Yarche’s needs. The retailer turned to automation to accelerate service, cut down on errors, and reduce the workload on staff.

Another innovation is coming to Russian stores this fall. Self-checkout stations in Moscow will soon allow age verification through biometrics, enabling the purchase of restricted items without manual ID checks.
