Smart Heated Benches Designed to Keep Russians Warm This Winter
The student-developed “Warm Place” project combines comfort, technology, and sustainability in urban spaces.
A student from Tver State University, Sofya Smetannikova, has designed a “smart bench” equipped with multiple high-tech features, including built-in heating, USB charging ports, and an information display. The project aims to make public spaces more comfortable and connected — even during Russia’s coldest months.
According to the creator, the design uses a modular system, allowing new functions to be added depending on location and need. Benches in historical areas, for instance, could broadcast audio tours for visitors.
Enhancing Urban Life and Tourism
The project was named a winner of the UMNIK innovation grant program, which supports young Russian inventors. Smetannikova believes the initiative will improve quality of life for residents and increase the tourism appeal of local communities. A working prototype of the bench is expected to be built within a year.
Across Russia, cities are adopting AI-driven urban technologies to make life easier for citizens. Earlier this year, Skolkovo resident company Indoors Navigation launched a 3D navigation system with augmented reality at a railway station in Rostov-on-Don. The platform automatically builds optimal routes through a mobile app or touchscreen terminals, marking another step toward smarter, more connected public spaces.
