Sevastopol State University, working together with Rosenergoatom, has launched a reactor simulator designed to train and retrain employees of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

An analytical simulator of a VVER-1000 reactor – the same type used at operating nuclear power plants – has been installed in the university’s Nuclear Power Engineering Systems laboratory. Operators and process engineers train on a high-precision digital model of a power unit powered by Russian-developed software.

Students will use the simulator to practise operating power-unit systems, rehearse responses to abnormal situations and pass certification exams before gaining access to real equipment. Those who master the simulator’s design and operating algorithms in detail are already around 80% prepared for employment and operational tasks within Rosenergoatom and Rosatom.

Practising Skills in a Virtual Environment

In the future, Sevastopol plans to establish a world-class international campus that will train specialists for key sectors of the economy. The project envisages the creation of six clusters, one of which will be the Centre for New Nuclear and Energy Technologies.

Earlier, the Tyumen Centre for Additional Professional Education developed engineering simulators for training specialists in the oil and gas sector. The Virtual Field complex includes eight simulators and allows trainees to practise bringing equipment online and responding to emergency scenarios in a safe virtual environment.
