During two months of trials, the system operated without a single intervention from a specialist.

The first driverless train launched in the Moscow metro has proven its reliability and safety, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on social media.

The train was tested on the Russian-built Moskva-2024 model without passengers. During two months of trials, the operator stationed in the cabin for monitoring did not intervene in the system’s operation even once. In total, the train covered more than 1,000 kilometers along the Big Circle Line.

Trials to Continue

Software for the train, infrastructure, scheduling, and dispatching was developed by specialists at the Center for Research and Development of Autonomous Transport. The system autonomously accelerates and brakes the train and opens and closes the doors at stations. If foreign objects appear on the tracks, the system immediately signals the train. The software also monitors train intervals.

Testing of the driverless train will continue. By the end of this year, the train will begin running regularly without passengers on the Big Circle Line alongside other trains, maintaining standard Moscow metro intervals. Passenger service is expected to begin in 2027, and by 2030 authorities plan to launch the first fully driverless metro line.
