Sarmat Bitiev: Children Need the Skills to Stay Safe in the Digital World
At the 2nd Global Digital Forum in Moscow, participants are building international cooperation on digital safety. One focus is protecting children from online threats and developing common approaches to keeping them safe.
Sarmat Bitiev, chairman of the Committee for Communications and Mass Communications of South Ossetia, signed an agreement to establish a global alliance for protecting children in the digital environment. The signing marked the start of efforts to build an international mechanism to keep children safe online, protect their rights and interests, and bring governments and organizations together to address these challenges. Bitiev spoke to the IT Russia media platform about the initiative’s goals and the principles of raising children to use digital technologies safely.
– Children face a range of threats in the digital environment. In my view, children in South Ossetia, including in Tskhinvali, face the same risks as children in other countries and cities. That’s why we believe it makes sense to take part in establishing a global alliance to protect children online.
This initiative should help develop common rules for protecting children, allowing them to use the internet freely while staying safe. Our goal isn’t to surround children with an impenetrable wall of restrictions. That’s impossible in today’s world. What matters is giving the next generation the tools and skills they need to grow and develop safely, thoughtfully and creatively in the digital environment.
