Nornickel aims to raise the economic impact of artificial intelligence deployment to 50 billion rubles (about $660 million) annually by 2030, Potanin said.

AI is being rolled out across a wide range of operations. At ore processing facilities, neural networks already control 70% of equipment and make decisions 100 times more frequently than human operators. The technology helps offset labor shortages at remote sites, while not replacing human workers. Instead, it takes over routine tasks, freeing up time for staff to focus on more complex decisions.

“Artificial intelligence should not replace us – it should assist us. Breakthrough decisions require human energy. No matter how advanced AI becomes, we remain human, and the human element in decision-making will remain,” Potanin said.

The company has been actively deploying AI technologies since 2021.
