Russia has taken another step toward enabling in-flight internet access across its civil aviation fleet. Roselektronika, a holding within the Rostec state corporation, has developed a new digital communications system that delivers broadband connectivity directly onboard aircraft.

“Thanks to this system, it is now possible to set up video conferencing, make phone calls from onboard terminals, and access the internet from mobile devices, including in secure mode,” Rostec said in a statement.

The system is not a prototype. It is already in use on a Tu-214 aircraft operated by a commercial airline and is ready for serial production.

Earlier reports indicated that commercial access to satellite internet could become available on Russian aircraft and trains starting in 2027. This would be enabled by the deployment of the Rassvet low-Earth orbit satellite constellation.
