AI Protects St. Petersburg Monument From Vandalism

An AI-powered video analytics system has reduced incidents of unintentional vandalism at the bust of explorer Nikolay Przhevalsky in St. Petersburg's Alexander Garden by 90% over the past six months.

Since January 2026, the monument has been monitored by a digital system that detects potentially damaging visitor behavior and issues an automated voice warning. According to project specialists, most tourists refrained from touching the monument after hearing the audio alert.

"St. Petersburg is a leader in applying digital technologies across many areas of urban management. We are putting advanced technologies to work in protecting the city's cultural heritage. Artificial intelligence will help provide an additional layer of protection for our iconic monuments, which have long attracted large numbers of tourists," said St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov.

The video analytics system is now operating at more than 40 monuments across the city. Authorities are preparing a priority list of additional heritage sites to be connected to the network and plan to enhance the system with an AI-powered voice module capable of serving as an interactive city audio guide.
