Researchers at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University have created a framework that uses artificial intelligence to assess tourism’s impact on a region’s economy and daily life.

The system analyzes three layers at once: economic, social, and infrastructure. At the economic level, it calculates tourism revenue, its share in regional output, and tax contributions. At the social level, it evaluates employment and income in the sector. At the infrastructure level, it tracks usage of transport, hotels, and natural sites, and forecasts seasonal peaks.

“The tourism industry is a tool for structural regional development, influencing employment, investment attractiveness, infrastructure growth, and quality of life. That makes it critical to build a comprehensive system capable of assessing tourism’s contribution to socio-economic development. The use of AI technologies makes such a system more adaptive, precise, and resilient, which is essential in a volatile external environment,” said Natalya Omarova, a professor in the Department of Management Technologies at the university and one of the developers.

According to her data, business interest in AI in tourism is already growing: among small and medium-sized companies, adoption of intelligent technologies increased from 18% to 43% between 2022 and 2024. Personalized offers raise average transaction values by 12–17%, while dynamic pricing reduces costs by 15–22%.

The new model could be used by regional authorities and tourism development organizations for strategic planning.
