Norilsk Unveils Big Data System to Monitor Permafrost

The monitoring network covers the area from Norilsk to Dudinka and includes thousands of sensors that transmit data around the clock to a centralized operations center. The system is used to assess the condition of frozen soils, plan maintenance work, and identify risks to industrial and infrastructure facilities.

The meeting also focused on the use of artificial intelligence in regulatory oversight, the development of soil quality indicators for environmental standards, and a unified approach to accounting for costs when calculating damage caused to soil.

According to Rosprirodnadzor, the agency is already using 15 AI assistants. Digital tools are helping process large volumes of data and support risk-based environmental monitoring.
