Russia Introduces AI Education Starting in Elementary School
A pilot course in artificial intelligence has launched in Moscow for fifth-grade students.

Moscow has rolled out a new educational initiative: a hands-on artificial intelligence course designed specifically for fifth graders. The project was announced by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
More than 130 schools and nearly 12,000 students are already participating in the program.
According to the mayor, the course is part of a broader effort to strengthen the digital component of education. Teachers are also learning to use new tools. About 1,700 educators have completed specialized training, where they learn to apply artificial intelligence in daily work, such as preparing homework assignments or creating instructional videos.
Earlier, President Vladimir Putin signed a set of directives on the development of artificial intelligence. The document calls for updating federal educational standards to include AI-related competencies. The government has been instructed to incorporate AI technologies into higher and vocational education programs.
The directives also provide for measures to improve citizens’ digital literacy, including guidance on safe use of AI services. In effect, artificial intelligence technologies are being embedded across the education system at all levels, from schools to universities, and are becoming a key element in training specialists for the digital economy.
