Russia Tests Remote-Control System for Heavy Equipment in Arctic Regions

Russia's Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions has launched a project to develop a remote-control system for construction and other heavy machinery operating in the country's Arctic regions.

The project envisions operators controlling construction equipment and other heavy machinery remotely over high-speed data links. The initiative is being led by the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions.

Development is focused on three areas. Modern machines are expected to connect directly through their onboard data bus. Older equipment can be retrofitted with secondary actuators and servo motors that physically operate the existing levers and pedals. The system also requires a continuous video feed to give remote operators real-time visibility.

The project is currently in the prototype and testing phase. Engineers at the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions, working with industry partners, are testing the system on operational port cranes in Sirius. The development is being funded entirely by the center.
