AI Brings Vladivostok City Photography to Life

An exhibition titled Port Pripiski Vladivostok: Navigatsiya 2025 (Home Port Vladivostok: Navigation 2025) has opened at the ArtEtazh Center for Contemporary Art in Vladivostok. Marking the city's 166th anniversary, the exhibition combines traditional photography with artificial intelligence.

The project features 10 photographs capturing different views of Vladivostok, including wind sweeping across a hilltop, dragon boat races in the bay, and an evening sunset along the waterfront. An AI model analyzed the mood of each image and generated matching visual effects and music. Visitors can view animated versions of the photographs by scanning a QR code.

The competition attracted more than 2,500 photographs submitted by 485 photographers. The final album includes 166 winning images across the categories Vesna (Spring), Gorozhane (City Residents), Mesta Sily (Places of Power), Ritmy Ulits (Street Rhythms), Sady. Parki. Skvery (Gardens. Parks. Public Squares), Plyazhi (Beaches), and Ochkury.

Andrey Kartashov, Vice President of Rostelecom, said the combination of animation and music offers visitors a new way to experience the photographs, while project curator Anton Novgorodov described the approach as a synergy between photography and digital technologies.

The exhibition runs through Aug. 2. Admission is free.
