AI-Powered Traffic Lights Coming to Russian Cities by 2027

Russia is rolling out smart traffic light systems that predict congestion, sync with navigation apps, and adapt in real time to accidents and public events.
Officials in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug have announced a major overhaul of regional traffic infrastructure: by 2027, the area will be equipped with AI-driven traffic lights. These systems are designed to forecast congestion, dynamically adjust their timing during accidents or mass events, and integrate with in-car navigation systems.
Pilot programs are already operational in the cities of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, where smart lights have been installed at critical intersections. The results are striking—morning congestion has dropped by 35 percent, evening traffic by 22 percent, and weekend delays by up to 45 percent, even amid rising vehicle numbers.
A key feature of the project is deep integration with digital services. AI algorithms will analyze vast volumes of data to prevent traffic jams before they even form.
