AI-Powered Traffic Monitoring Expands to Northern Russia’s Highways

Russia is equipping northern highways with smart surveillance systems that use artificial intelligence to enforce traffic laws and reduce accidents.

Roads across Russia are being upgraded with digital enforcement systems that use AI and video analytics to monitor speed and rule violations. These efforts are now reaching remote regions in the north. In the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, authorities have invested 734 million rubles into installing intelligent traffic monitoring systems along major highways.

The new systems will be deployed across six road segments, including critical arteries such as the highway from Khanty-Mansiysk to Surgut, as well as routes between Surgut and Lyantor, and Nefteyugansk to Surgut.

Designed to operate autonomously, the AI-driven systems detect speeding and illegal passing on restricted sections of road. The neural network calculates vehicle speed by measuring the time it takes to pass between control points. All camera data is streamed to a central control hub and stored for a month.

According to local officials, these smart traffic solutions are already influencing driver behavior and contributing to a noticeable reduction in accidents across Russian roads.
