Engineers at Gazprom Neft have developed the industry's first simulator designed to improve the efficiency of waterflooding. This method is used to develop mature wells. Fluid is injected into reservoirs to displace hydrocarbons closer to the surface. One of the main challenges is the formation of fractures in the rock, which reduces production efficiency.

Gazprom Neft specialists developed a digital model that predicts the formation of such fractures. It analyzes field data and helps determine optimal parameters for upcoming operations. As a result, production efficiency increases by at least 7%.

The simulator has already been successfully tested at Gazprom Neft sites in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area-Yugra and Yamal. It is expected to be used at other fields where waterflooding technology is applied.

"A significant share of the company's production today comes from mature fields. Their development requires a detailed understanding of subsurface characteristics to predict and prevent potential geological complications. Developing our own digital solutions helps us select optimal approaches to improving production efficiency. The service created by the Gazprom Neft team will contribute to achieving our company's goals and extend the development life cycle of complex and mature fields," said Bogdan Kostyuk, head of Gazprom Neft's Technology Development Department.
