Russian-Built "Fluff-Vac" Robots Begin Testing on Moscow Streets

Multifunctional robots capable of collecting cottonwood fluff, leaves, and small debris have entered pilot testing on the streets of Moscow. Trials are underway at Victory Park, Kolomenskaya Embankment, and the Skolkovo Innovation Center.

"At first glance, the idea of a robot designed to collect cottonwood fluff may sound like a joke, but from a technological standpoint such systems already exist. In fact, several Russian companies are now producing robots that can efficiently remove cottonwood fluff as part of comprehensive urban maintenance," said Alexander Ulanov, deputy CEO of the Moscow Innovation Cluster.

One example is Piksel (Pixel), developed by Moscow-based company Avtonomika. The robot uses cameras and sensors to navigate and is already capable of sweeping streets, clearing snow, and washing urban infrastructure. A new vacuum attachment is currently being tested at the Skolkovo Innovation Center, enabling the robot to collect cottonwood fluff and other small debris. Designed for year-round operation, the robot can work autonomously through extended shifts. To support the safe deployment of robotics in urban environments, the Moscow Innovation Cluster has also established a dedicated Robotics Testing Center.
