Smart Cameras Strengthen Forest Protection in Russia's Krasnoyarsk Region
Authorities in Russia's Krasnoyarsk Region have expanded the Lesookhranitel (Forest Guardian) forest monitoring system with 11 new panoramic cameras, bringing the network to more than 180 devices across the region.

The new cameras operate around the clock and can automatically detect signs of smoke and open flames. Each unit completes up to eight full rotations per hour, sending information about potential threats to a centralized digital platform. After the alerts are processed, the data is forwarded to the nearest wildfire response teams.
According to Vitaly Prostakishin, director of the regional forest fire center, the video monitoring system has detected 233 smoke events since the beginning of the year. Following verification, specialists confirmed 23 forest fires and 28 fires in other land-use categories.
Regional authorities say early detection allows firefighting crews to respond more quickly and reduce the area affected by wildfires. Forest conditions are also monitored using drones. This season, the regional forest fire center expanded its drone fleet to 81 aircraft.
