Tomsk Researchers Develop Component for Next-Generation Communications Antennas

Researchers at the Laboratory of System Design and Automated Engineering at Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR) have developed a phase shifter—a key component of modern smart antennas and phased-array antenna systems. The technology could be used in future 5G and 6G networks.

Manufactured using a standard printed circuit board process, the device can instantly steer a radio beam without any moving mechanical parts. According to the developers, the technology could be used in cellular base stations, connected vehicles, and unmanned aerial systems.

"Phased-array antenna systems consist of numerous small antennas that combine radio waves into a single narrow, high-power beam, much like the beam of a spotlight. The phase shifter is the 'brain' of such a system. By adjusting the phase of the signal at each antenna element, it can redirect the radio beam in milliseconds without physically moving the antenna," the university said.

The capability is critical for ultra-high-speed wireless communications, allowing a base station to continuously steer a dedicated radio beam toward a user's smartphone even while the person is moving.
