MAI Developing New Navigation System for Aircraft
It will interact with low-orbit satellites.

Specialists at the Moscow Aviation Institute are working on a new navigation system for aviation. It will make it possible to determine the position of aircraft based on signals from low-orbit satellites. In essence, this is an alternative to tools that operate on the basis of GPS and GLONASS.
The use of low-orbit satellites, which are located at altitudes of 500 to 1,500 km, offers significant advantages. In particular, the relatively short distance to the satellites provides a stronger signal. The method is based on analysis of Doppler frequency shift. Satellites move at a speed of around 7 to 8 km/s, so the frequency of the received signal changes depending on whether the satellite is approaching the aircraft or moving away from it. A special algorithm will be able to use these changes to calculate coordinates.
The project is currently at the conceptual development stage.
