A virtual patient has been introduced at Volgograd State Medical University. It is essentially an AI-based training simulator. With its help, future doctors will hone their skills in communicating properly with patients.

The simulator is built on a large language model. The algorithm replicates the behavior of the person with whom the medical student is conducting a dialogue, asking them questions. At the same time, the model exhibits its own character, which allows future medical professionals to get as close as possible to real-world practice, noted Alexander Tumarenko, co-author of the project and associate professor at VolgGMU.

"A future doctor's training begins not with prescribing treatment but with the ability to talk to a patient. It is precisely at this stage that second-year students face their main difficulty: they have theoretical knowledge, but not yet the skill of live dialogue. The Department of Internal Medicine at VolgGMU is addressing this task purposefully, and one of the latest developments is precisely this AI-based virtual patient," Tumarenko said.
