Library in Karelia Receives Scanner for Digitizing Rare and Fragile Books

The central library of the Kostomuksha municipal district in Russia’s Republic of Karelia has been equipped with the Russian-made ElarScan A1-600KS planetary scanner, enabling the digitization of even the most fragile and oversized publications.

The scanner’s key feature is its ability to handle documents that cannot be fully opened without risking damage. Its transformable cradle supports both flat and V-shaped scanning modes, making the device suitable for bound collections, albums, and rare books. The floor-standing system can digitize materials up to 30 centimeters thick and weighing up to 50 kilograms.

A built-in glass plate with a positioning mechanism and automatic scan activation when lowered is designed to speed up large-scale document processing. The system is supplied with the Russian-developed SkanImidzh software, which manages image capture, processing, and storage. The hardware is included in Russia’s registry of domestically produced radio-electronic equipment, while the software is listed in the registry maintained by the Ministry of Digital Development.

ElarScan-series scanners are used by libraries, archives, museums, and universities across Russia to create digital collections and preserve documentary heritage.
