Transneft Digital Model to Assess Risks in Permafrost Areas
Transneft Research Institute’s team has developed an engineering digital model for geotechnical monitoring in permafrost regions. The solution combines a 3D model of a facility, geodetic data, and numerical modeling.

This approach makes it possible to use field observations and computational results together to assess the condition of industrial facilities built on permafrost. The project also envisages the creation of a unified geotechnical monitoring database based on 3D models. According to the institute, the model helps identify in advance the risk of structures reaching their limit states as a result of climate change. It can also help select engineering solutions that take industrial safety and economic efficiency into account.
The development received an award in an international competition for scientific, technical, and innovative projects focused on the development of the Arctic and the continental shelf.
However, the publicly available announcement provides no details about a specific facility, the composition of the monitoring system, the model’s predictive accuracy, or any comparison of its calculations with observed deformations. The date of the model’s first deployment was also not disclosed. As a result, its stated capabilities cannot yet be assessed quantitatively.
