Nenets Language to Be Added to Yandex Perevodchik by 2026
The rare language of one of Russia’s Indigenous northern peoples is set to become available in the translation service.

The Nenets language will be added to Yandex Perevodchik (Yandex Translate) by the end of 2026, according to the press service of the government of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The region plans to provide the developer with 100,000 parallel sentences, the minimum dataset required to launch a demo version. Experts in Yamal have already translated half of that volume.
For Teachers and Civil Servants
The language corpus is being compiled by local teachers and journalists, who are translating texts from Russian into Nenets. Yandex will handle the technical side of the project. The digital service is expected to support teachers at boarding schools attended by children of tundra reindeer herders, government employees, and administrative and judicial workflows.
Uliana Kalenyuk, director of the department for Indigenous peoples of the North in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, said that machine translation will help make the native language part of everyday life.
