Russia Develops Algorithm to Optimize Oil Field Design

New tool improves accuracy in evaluating extraction technologies for scaling decisions

Scientists at Rosneft’s Ufa research institute have patented a new method for assessing the technological efficiency of oil and gas field development, the company’s press service said.

The approach accounts for geological variations across different parts of a field and selects the most suitable well completion technologies, including hydraulic fracturing methods.

Researchers integrated the algorithm into RN-KIN, a corporate information system, as a software module. It collects and analyzes geological and physical reservoir data, production metrics, well completion parameters, and hydraulic fracturing design inputs. The system then compares production performance using existing technologies at the field with projected outcomes from alternative approaches.

Tested in the Field

The software module has been tested at the Priobskoye field. The company plans to deploy the tool across 1,000 high-tech wells with recoverable reserves totaling 60 million tons.

Earlier, specialists at Rosneft’s Tyumen research institute developed a seismic facies model of the Russkoye field to improve identification of oil-bearing zones during drilling.
