Researchers at the Institute of Urology and Human Reproductive Health at Sechenov University have conducted the world’s first meta-analysis of artificial intelligence systems designed for use in urology.

Based on the findings, the team plans to evaluate the AI services landscape and develop its own solution. The results were published in a leading international urology journal and featured by a U.S. news aggregator, the institute said.

One-Size-Fits-All Approach Falls Short

As oncological diseases become more individualized, a uniform approach to treatment – for example, in prostate cancer – is no longer effective, doctors say.

“It is clear that a physician cannot independently analyze all genetic features of prostate cancer. That is why there is active global development of AI systems capable of analyzing patients’ genetic profiles, distinguishing between cancer subtypes, and supporting doctors in selecting personalized therapies,” said Evgeny Shpot, deputy director of the institute.

The research team analyzed AI systems developed in multiple countries, aiming to assess their ability to identify different types of prostate cancer and support clinical decision-making. The study included 15 AI systems from China, South Korea, Germany, France, and Spain, used for tasks ranging from risk assessment to recurrence prediction.

AI Shows Strong Predictive Performance

“According to the study, the average performance of the analyzed AI systems is around 80%, depending on the task. They are most effective in predicting clinical risk and treatment response in prostate cancer,” said Mark Taratkin, a researcher at the institute.

The findings highlight the institute’s strong expertise at the global level and open the door to more advanced AI tools that could support urologists both in Russia and internationally.

Earlier, researchers at Perm Polytechnic developed AI tools to assess tumor aggressiveness.
