Russian scientists have developed compact digital colposcopes to help detect cervical cancer in underserved regions where specialist care is limited.

Digital portable colposcopes developed by researchers at Samara State Medical University are now undergoing pilot testing in Russia. The new devices aim to improve early detection of cervical cancer, particularly in hard-to-reach areas with limited access to medical specialists, according to Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Eight medical institutions in the region have already received the units. The colposcopes deliver high-resolution magnified images and store patient data for follow-up diagnostics. Thanks to their compact design, the devices can be deployed in mobile medical teams and rural clinics.

The project is a joint effort between the university’s Institute for Innovative Development and its Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with support from Russia’s Ministry of Health. Following the trial phase, the team plans to design a screening model tailored to remote and rural communities.

This initiative is seen as a key step in tackling women’s cancer in Russia, especially in regions where access to specialized care remains a challenge.
