Russian Scientists Train Neural Network to Predict Nuclear Plant Emergencies

A new AI system developed at Russia’s Kurchatov Institute can predict nuclear incidents before they unfold, offering a potential breakthrough in plant safety.

Researchers at Russia’s National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” have developed an artificial neural network capable of predicting potential emergencies at nuclear power plants. The system uses AI to analyze thermophysical parameters and identify early risk factors that traditional systems might miss, according to a report by itspeaker.ru.

The neural network is trained on data from possible accident scenarios, including off-design events such as coolant loss or reactor core meltdown. It not only forecasts the development of hazardous situations but also recommends mitigation strategies.

Previously, such safety analyses required enormous computational resources and conservative modeling assumptions. Now, the AI-driven approach accelerates the process while improving accuracy — a critical factor for ensuring nuclear safety.

AI technologies are gradually being integrated into Russia’s nuclear energy sector. For example, the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant is already using an AI-based operator support system that can predict reactor conditions 30 minutes in advance.

This latest system is another step toward creating a “digital twin” of a nuclear power plant — one that can prevent disasters before they occur. It further solidifies Russia’s leadership in applying advanced technologies to the nuclear industry.
