K2Tech Experts Test Russia's First Enterprise Wi-Fi 7 Access Point
Eltex equipment delivered strong performance and supported all the key features of the new wireless data transmission standard.
Any modern organization has a vast number of internet-connected devices. That means businesses need access points capable not only of moving data quickly but also of maintaining stable simultaneous connections for dozens or hundreds of users.
A Real Boost in Network Throughput
K2Tech experts recently tested Russia's first enterprise Wi-Fi 7 access point, developed by Eltex. The device, called WEP-550K, was put through its paces under real-world enterprise scenarios.
The K2Tech team identified several key advantages of the WEP-550K, including the new 6 GHz frequency band and mandatory use of the WPA3 security protocol. The Russian access point also uses MLO technology, which can increase real-world throughput by transmitting data simultaneously over multiple radio links. The tests produced impressive results.
High Speeds Aren't the Main Point
“During testing of the Eltex WEP-550K, we saw real-world speeds on a smartphone reach 2 Gbps – an impressive result, although achievable only under ideal conditions. But the main practical value of the new standard lies not in peak speed, but in more efficient, predictable and stable network performance under heavy loads and interference,” says Viktor Belyaev, a wireless technology expert at K2Tech.
The access point is specifically designed for environments with large numbers of simultaneous connections and heavy internet traffic. It operates in the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands and supports 4×4 MU-MIMO, MLO, 4096-QAM modulation and channel widths of up to 320 MHz.
Devices for Different Use Cases
Eltex's Wi-Fi 7 lineup currently includes three devices. In addition to the access point described above, it includes the WEP-500K, a tri-band device designed for offices, classrooms, conference rooms and other locations with large numbers of users. The dual-band WEP-50L is designed for large-scale deployments in locations with everyday network loads – offices, meeting rooms, small hotels, stores and institutions. All three devices are compatible with one another, allowing organizations to build infrastructure tailored to specific requirements.
The new equipment makes it possible to upgrade enterprise wireless networks in Russia from Wi-Fi 5/6 to Wi-Fi 7 without relying on foreign suppliers. But an access point alone is not enough for a complete modernization. Such an upgrade will also require substantial improvements to wired infrastructure, including a transition to 2.5/5/10-Gigabit Ethernet connections, higher-performance switches and compatible controllers.
Russian Manufacturers Seize New Opportunities
The new access point emerged from the intensive import-substitution drive that began in 2022. At that time, engineers from OCS's Engineering and Project Implementation Department modeled some of the first prototypes of enterprise wireless networks built with Qtech and Eltex equipment. The results showed that both approaches could support reliable enterprise-grade Wi-Fi networks and meet most operator and customer requirements.
In 2025, Russian manufacturers began preparing for the transition to Wi-Fi 7. By then, the market already offered a range of domestically produced wireless networking equipment. K2Tech experts analyzed products from 12 Russian brands and found that local companies had significantly stepped up development of import-independent equipment after 2022.
At this point, preparations for a large-scale modernization of enterprise networks using domestically produced equipment are continuing. Russian manufacturers are making effective use of the opportunities created by the departure of Western vendors, offering products capable of competing with imported alternatives.
