Moscow Schoolgirl Develops Robot for Planting

A graduate of the engineering class at Moscow School No. 1474 has developed a robot for automated planting. The device was presented at the Inzhenery budushchego conference. It significantly reduces the amount of manual labor required for planting.
In 2024 alone, demand for landscape design specialists in Russia increased by about 80%. At the same time, the industry faces a labor shortage of around 5 million people. Automation could partially address the problem.
The new robot is controlled by an operator using a joystick. One of its main components is a robotic arm with five degrees of freedom, which the student developed from scratch. The robot's claw combines digging and plant-gripping functions.
Tests were conducted in a box filled with soil. The robot successfully dug a hole, picked up a plant pot and placed it in the hole. A person only needs to water the plant and level the soil. The plans include full automation: integrating satellite navigation for positioning, AI-powered machine vision to identify plant species from labels on pots, and the ability to upload planting plans.
