In Russia, a Computer Will Count Fish in Yamal

Ahead of the fishing season, the region is rolling out a system known as Digital Fisheries.

In Russia, digital services are increasingly being used to support economic activity. A new development was announced in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where authorities are introducing online accounting for fish catches.

The region ranks among the country’s leaders in fishing. Over the past year, more than 10,000 tons of fish were harvested there. More than 70 companies are engaged in the industry, which is also a traditional livelihood for Indigenous communities.

A Digital Biography

Keeping track of resources is now set to become easier. The Tsifrovoye Rybolovstvo (Digital Fisheries) system will collect data directly from fishing sites. Scales and terminals will be installed on shore, with all information flowing into a single platform. The system will record the time of the catch, species, weight, and details of the fisher.

“A fish’s digital biography will begin right on the shore,” the outlet Muzhi-Inform reported.

The system is designed to operate even when internet connectivity is unstable. Digital technologies are also helping identify “hot spots” for fishing in Russia’s Far East. Artificial intelligence analyzes satellite data to indicate where the largest populations of herring and iwashi sardine are located.
