National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, the Bolshoy MEPhI (Big MEPhI consortium), and Rosatom have begun developing ultra-small nuclear reactors. The units will have capacities ranging from 5 to 50 megawatts and are intended to supply power to data centers. The project is aimed at addressing growing electricity demand driven by data center construction, according to Valery Romanyuk, vice rector of MEPhI and president of the Bolshoy MEPhI consortium.

Romanyuk said a dedicated team has been established to develop the power systems. The group will focus not only on supplying data centers with energy but also on improving the efficiency of their operations. Artificial intelligence technologies are expected to play a significant role in that effort. He added that the Bolshoy MEPhI consortium brings together the university and major companies to work jointly on complex projects in nuclear, quantum, and information technologies.
