St. Petersburg authorities plan to extend biometric fare payments to the entire public transportation network. The initiative is part of an agreement signed between the city administration and Sberbank during SPIEF 2026.

"Sber's advanced IT divisions are already operating in St. Petersburg. Further development of high-tech solutions that make fare payments even faster and more convenient is an important part of the partnership between the city and Sber. The introduction of biometric technology is a timely step in the digital transformation of urban transportation," St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said.

The city's biometric payment system is already operating on the metro network. The technology continues to be refined to reduce the time passengers spend completing transactions. Ahead of SPIEF 2026, biometric payments were also introduced at Pulkovo Airport. In the initial phase, the technology was deployed on flights between St. Petersburg and Moscow.
