Moscow Is Set to Let Riders Top Up Troika Transit Cards With the Digital Ruble This Summer
Moscow is preparing to begin testing digital ruble payments for Troika transit cards through the Metro Moskvy (Moscow Metro) app in the summer of 2026, expanding the use of Russia's central bank digital currency in public transportation.

The announcement was made by Maksim Liksutov, Moscow's deputy mayor for transport and industry.
"We are working with the Central Bank of Russia and VTB to launch a new payment option in the Metro Moskvy app. After successful testing, passengers will be able to top up their transit cards conveniently and securely using the digital ruble. Following instructions from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we are among the first to introduce advanced Russian payment technologies into the city's public transportation system," Liksutov said.
Liksutov also said that digital ruble transactions are securely protected and will allow passengers to purchase tickets without entering their bank card details.
Once testing is complete, passengers will be able not only to add funds to their Troika wallet but also to purchase transit passes using the new payment method.
