Russian Satellites Maneuver to Avoid Space Debris
An automated warning system for near-Earth space detects potential collisions between satellites and space debris several times a year.
The system promptly relays warnings to satellite operators. Elena Pavlova, chief designer of one of its components, explained that every cataloged fragment from a breakup is included in calculations of potential close approaches with active satellites in Russia’s orbital fleet. Roscosmos quickly passes the results on to satellite system operators, who make the final decision on whether to perform an avoidance maneuver.
Such maneuvers have already been carried out in practice. Specialists are paying close attention to the space debris problem, but Pavlova believes that countries will need to work together to develop a coordinated approach.
