Rosatom Upgrades Plutonium Purification Facility for Next-Generation Nuclear Fuel
Plutonium is expected to play a growing role in future nuclear energy projects as Rosatom completes another stage of modernization at its plutonium purification facility.

The Rosatom (State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom) Mining and Chemical Combine has completed the latest stage of upgrades to its plutonium purification facility. The modernization is expected to increase production of mixed uranium-plutonium nitride (MNUP) fuel for Generation IV reactor systems. It will also expand the plant's capacity to process scrap generated during MOX fuel manufacturing, allowing recovered plutonium to be returned to the fuel production cycle.
Modernization work began in 2024. As part of the project, the facility gradually migrated its process automation systems to updated domestically developed industrial control software.
