Russian Engineers Develop Drone Module for Precision Fertilizer Spraying

Russian researchers have developed a drone-based spraying system that can be attached to existing heavy UAVs, enabling precise and cost-efficient application of fertilizers and herbicides.

A youth engineering team at Groznenskiy gosudarstvennyy neftyanoi tekhnicheskiy universitet imeni akademika Millionshchikova (Grozny State Oil Technical University named after Academician Millionshchikov) has developed a drone module for accurate and efficient spraying of fertilizers and herbicides across agricultural fields, according to a statement from University 2035.

The team designed a spraying system for agricultural drones that could help farmers cut equipment operation and maintenance costs. The module can be mounted on any heavy drone, turning it into a smart sprayer. More precise application also reduces the amount of fertilizers and herbicides needed. The university said the system’s error margin does not exceed 0.5%.

No Domestic Equivalent

The system has no direct equivalents in Russia. It consists of a self-contained module with a tank, pump, controller and nozzles, and can operate in high temperatures and humid conditions.

A key technological advantage is a high-precision liquid flow regulator that allows farmers to spray crops that are particularly sensitive to dosage when applying fertilizers and agrochemicals. The system can be controlled via open-source drone software.
